Rules of the Open Microcosm Road
The open mic experience is unlike any other...but in Taos it's even more unique... so we call it the Open Microcosm. Sign ups must be done in person during the thirty minutes before the open mic begins and you must bring your own instrument(s)!  10 slots are available and the sign up sheet goes out in the room behind the stage exactly a half hour before the show starts. First come first served. You need to be there in person thirty minutes before showtime to select a slot, but most people show up 45 minutes to an hour and a half before show time and line up to get a slot. All ages are welcome, but if you're really young you'll need to nab an early slot... before 8pm... and be accompanied by a parent.... because it is a restaurant and a hotel as well as being a bar and music venue. Thanks for being cool about that. Once again... get there early to sign up. No phone ins. Sorry. On a typical night you'll have about 12 minutes to do your thing. If it takes you 8 minutes to tune up, plug in and get rolling then you only have 5 minutes left. Another example of the math involved: If your songs are all 8 minutes long then you only have time for one song. Please respect the math because if you go over you're stealing that time from other open mic performers and the host has the responsibility to cut you off if necessary, which nobody wants to see happen… especially the host. Slot times may vary so please be flexible and be ready! If you leave the building and can't be found when your slot starts you forfeit the slot. We try to be flexible but if the slots are all taken and an alternate fills in for you then there may not be time available to plug you back into the schedule when you magically reappear. Thanks for being cool about that. In the winter it runs from 6:30pm till 9:30pm. Summer hours are 7pm till 10pm.
Sound Equipment is provided ... speakers, microphones, guitar cords ...  but if you need special cords and adapters for your instruments or devices please bring them! If you need a special stool or a music stand bring them!
A modest sound system is provided with three vocal/instrument microphones and stands plus cables and two instrument channels with guitar cables. There are a couple more channels beyond that for additional sources, but you may have to bring your own preamps. these additional channels are primarily for plugging in more instruments and/or other devices that don't require mics/stands. You can always bring your own if you need one or two extra.
You MUST bring your own instrument and any devices for accompaniment ... and any special cables or adapters you need that are beyond the standard guitar or mic cable. If you use a CD to sing along with bring a portable CD player and the cords to attach it. If you require special effects bring an effects device. If you sing along with an MP3 bring an MP3 player or whatever it is you need beyond a normal microphone and a guitar cord. Be sure to bring your own cable/adaptor to make those devices work. The mixer will accommodate either a ¼" mono input, left and right RCA inputs. Along with your adapters please have a cord that will reach from you to the mixer…that should be at least 6 feet long if you plan to have the device next to you while performing. It can be shorter if you're just going to rest the device next to the mixer while performing.  One last time... You must bring your own instruments and devices! Thanks!

It's a little early for me to be set up and singing by 10am, but I love playing at the Farmers Market. I'm playing music from 10am - noon, but the market runs from 8am to 1pm. I'm looking forward to singing to the sweet herbs, cheese, eggs, meats, honey, jams, breads, fruits, and veggies and the awesome folks that grew them.

Here's what the Farmer's Market has to say for itself:
Taos’s premiere, authentic summer market, offers farm-direct groceries from eight northern New Mexico counties and Costilla county, Colorado.
The 2013 season begins in mid May and runs through late October from 8am-1pm. We're located in the Town Hall parking lot, next to the Taos Public Library on Camino de Placitas.
We offer a large variety of fresh, local vegetables and fruits as well as cheeses and dairy products, delicious baked goods, honey, grassfed meats, eggs, jams, chutneys, flowers and plants. We have live music and entertainment too!
We are a favorite, festive venue for young and old alike and take pride in offering this in Taos - a unique and special town, steeped in tradition and great beauty.
Come one, come all, but please, out of respect for the growers, leave your dog at home in the shade!

Close Out "Hootenanny"

16th Annual Woody Guthrie Folk Festival

Okemah, Ok 74859

website: http://www.woodyguthrie.com

This beloved event takes place at the historic Crystal Theater. This is a full blown Hootenanny with numerous artists from the festival playing primarily Woody's tunes accompanied by Terry Buffalo Ware's All Star Band (of which I get to be a member if I get there in time ... I have an in with The Man). After this show we all say our goodbyes and I head to OK City with some friends for my Annual Post Woody Fest Concert. See the calendar entry for the show in this section for further details.

Check back here and/or see the Woody Guthrie Festival site for more details and scheduling updates for myself and all the other great artists.  I'll be hanging out and sitting in throughout the entire festival. See you there!

Annual Post Woody Fest Concert - DonCon and Friends

The Blue Door

Oklahoma City, Ok 73069

phone: 405-524-0738

PRICE: $15.00

website: www.bluedoorokc.com

This is one of the coolest places to play in the country as far as I'm concerned. After we wrap up the Woody Guthrie Festival each year on Sunday (in the early afternoon in Okemah) I have historically headed to Norman for this annual concert with my band and some help from my dear musical friend Terry Buffalo Ware ... and whoever else gets recruited. The Chouse was a haven for me musically and personally. It was owned by my dear friends Tom Lee and Mary Katherine Long. Tom has moved on to the other side and Mary Katherine has passed the Chouse along to new owners. The Annual Post Woody Fest Concert now moves to a familiar and awesome location: The Blue Door in Oklahoma City. I have made some of the best music of my life and had some of the best times at The Blue Door with owner Greg Johnson so this is a fitting move for this annual event.

Joel Rafael and Friends - DonCon Doing a Short Set Along with a Host of Awesome Red Dirt Friends

Cimarron Breeze Concert Series - at the Old Church Center

780 N Main St
Perkins, Ok

phone: 405-547-2411

PRICE: $15.00

website: http://www.okterritory.org/events.html

This beautiful and historic location will be a mini Woody Guthrie Festival for this evening. Many of us will still be sleep deprived from the actual Woody Guthrie Folk Festival which takes place the week before this show. Monica Taylor is organizing this event and she is worth the price of admission alone. Other artists scheduled to appear currently include:
Monica Taylor
The Red Dirt Rangers
Don Morris
Greg Jacobs

Thanks!

Taos, NM 87571

phone: 575-758-8882

website: http://ktaos.com/SolarRadio/World-Famous

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the airwaves.... This crazy show will occur on the second Sunday of each month on our beloved, all solar powered radio station, KTAOS, broadcasting from beautiful Taos, Nm. Jimmy Stadler and myself have been partners in crime and music since I made Taos my full time home base. We ski together, we mountain bike together, we gig together and now we co-host a radio show together. We'll have our usual rants in between cuts from various artists from the region and folks who have a specific connection to New Mexico. There will also be interviews and live performances each month. Expect the unexpected and tune in when you can. KTAOS streams live on the internet to wherever you are. Just click this link and hit the button/arrow that says "LISTEN LIVE TO KTAO 101.9"

The KTAOS Solar Center is one of the many things I love about living and playing music here in Taos. The patio area is now a medium sized indoor venue and bar and the Pavilion (big white tent) offers one of the best dance floors you'll ever find. Look for regional and national acts coming through to play both stages. There's a lot to love here.

"The Station Bar" as it's now called is open nightly at 5pm - full bar - all ages - food - NO PARKING ON THE HIGHWAY PLEASE

PRICE: $10.00

This is a really cool joint in a really cool town with some really cool people. The Opera House is a gorgeous venue. Looking forward to this one. Info from their web site below:

The Buckhorn Saloon has long been known for its warm atmosphere and diverse clientele. Located in Pinos Altos, New Mexico, the bar on the mountain sits at 7000’ feet. Since it first opened in the 1860’s the Buckhorn has been a gathering place for great food, music and camaraderie. Whether it’s strangers sharing tables, standing on the front porch to watch the sunset, or basking in the warmth of the fire in the winter, locals, world travelers and people from all walks of life feel at home in this historic bar.

Musicians from all over love to play here because of our great audiences and intimate venue. Our clientele loves music! The Bar Manager, Melanie Zipin, is both a performing and visual artist. She plays in a duo with her husband, as well as with a full band, dubbed ‘the Z Factor’. She has 3 CD’s to her credit.
